Background of the Study

Effective communication between nurses and patients is critical to the success of medical treatments. In healthcare settings, nurse-patient communication influences treatment compliance, which is essential for improving health outcomes. Communication helps in explaining diagnoses, treatment plans, and medication instructions, fostering trust and promoting a better understanding of the patient's role in their recovery process. In Adamawa State, where there is a diverse population with varying levels of health literacy and language barriers, nurse-patient communication becomes even more significant.

Non-compliance to prescribed treatments is a significant challenge in many regions, often leading to increased healthcare costs, longer recovery times, and worse health outcomes. Nurses, as the primary point of contact for patients during treatment, are in a unique position to address issues related to non-compliance through clear, empathetic communication. This study aims to investigate how nurse-patient communication affects treatment compliance in Adamawa State, focusing on the quality of communication, barriers to effective communication, and how communication impacts patients’ adherence to treatment regimens.

Statement of the Problem

Poor nurse-patient communication is often cited as one of the reasons for low treatment compliance, which can lead to suboptimal health outcomes. In Adamawa State, healthcare workers face challenges such as language differences, inadequate training in communication skills, and high patient loads, which may negatively impact communication and, consequently, treatment compliance. This study will explore how effective communication strategies can enhance compliance and reduce the barriers that hinder nurse-patient communication in the region.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the relationship between nurse-patient communication and treatment compliance in Adamawa State.

2. To identify factors that hinder effective nurse-patient communication in Adamawa State.

3. To evaluate how improvements in nurse-patient communication can increase treatment compliance in Adamawa State.

Research Questions

1. What is the relationship between nurse-patient communication and treatment compliance in Adamawa State?

2. What factors affect the quality of nurse-patient communication in Adamawa State?

3. How can improvements in nurse-patient communication enhance treatment compliance in Adamawa State?

Research Hypotheses

1. There is a positive relationship between effective nurse-patient communication and treatment compliance in Adamawa State.

2. Barriers such as language, time constraints, and patient health literacy negatively affect nurse-patient communication in Adamawa State.

3. Improved nurse-patient communication significantly increases treatment compliance in Adamawa State.

Definitions of Terms

• Nurse-Patient Communication: The exchange of information, verbal and non-verbal, between nurses and patients regarding health-related matters.

• Treatment Compliance: The extent to which a patient correctly follows medical advice, including medication regimens, lifestyle changes, and scheduled appointments.
